“Give someone a fish and they will eat for a day; teach someone to fish and they will never go hungry again … “
At D-NOSES we have taken this age-old adage to heart. It is a big world and there are a lot of people that need help. The project has from the start made a case for creating not just a new method, but a replicable one that can also be used by others. The MOOCs, training materials and guidelines made available at the International Odour Observatory all serve this purpose.
In line with the concept of the observatory as a one stop shop for odour management, the materials have been targeted to different audiences and stakeholders. For example, our guidelines help specific groups such as citizens, industry, or policy makers, by providing useful advice on how to get started when encountering an issue.
The observatory also provides learning modules which help all stakeholders to understand more about odours in general. An important part of empowering people is ensuring that they believe they have the ability and right to be involved in decisions about their own environment. For this reason, there is one learning module specifically aimed at educators to help support teachers who can include citizen science and odours in their teaching plans, helping to form a new generation of environmentally responsible citizens.
“ teach someone to teach others to fish, and the world will never go hungry!”
