Politecnico di Milano
The Politecnico di Milano (English: Polytechnic University of Milan) is the oldest university in Milan and the largest technical university in Italy offering undergraduate, graduate and higher education courses in engineering, architecture and design. The Olfactometric Laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano was the first Olfactometric Laboratory in Italy in 1997, and since then, it has grown its activity including different methods for odour measurement. Such methods include dynamic olfactometry, electronic nose and chemical analysis by GC-MS. Almost all relevant studies of odour impact assessment by the combination of different techniques in Italy were conducted by the Laboratory, also including other techniques such as dispersion modelling, field inspection and questioning surveys involving the resident population. The Olfactometric Laboratory also has a unique expertise in the study and the development of specific equipment for odour sampling and is actually considered the Italian reference for environmental odour monitoring.
Profiles
Name: Laura Capelli
Function: Assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” of the Polytechnic of Milano.
She received her PhD in industrial chemistry and chemical engineering in 2008. Her research is focused on odour sampling, development of electronic noses for environmental air quality monitoring, dispersion modelling and characterization of odour emissions from different industrial activities. She authored more than 100 papers on international journals and conference proceedings. She is in the scientific and organizing committee of the NOSE conference series, and member of the editorial board of Chemical Engineering Transactions. She has a wide experience in environmental odour management problems being involved in several monitoring activities on different facilities (waste and wastewater treatment plants, refineries, rendering plants, foundries, etc.) as documented by her several publications on the matter.
Name: Selena Sironi
Function: Professor Odour science and Engineering at Polytechnic of Milano.
Selena’s research focuses on different aspects of environmental chemical engineering, and specializing on problems related to the control and measurement of environmental odour emissions. She is co-author of over 150 publications in journals, at conferences and in books. She is a scientific organizer of international conferences on environmental odour monitoring and control (NOSE conferences) and she joined the
scientific committee of international conferences on odour (IWA conferences). Selena is appointed professor of Environmental Chemical Engineering (since 2008/2009 to now) and Odour science and Engineering (since 2014-2015 to now) at Politecnico di Milano. She also has
a lot of experience in the management of environmental odour-related problems having conducted different monitoring activities for important Italian companies acting in the field of oil & gas (e.g., Eni, Esso) and waste management and disposal (e.g., Econord, Italcave), as well
as for Italian local authorities (Regional Environmental Protection Agencies and municipalities).
